Grand Coulee is a small town located above Grand Coulee Dam. Grand Coulee Dam, built on the Columbia River, is a hydroelectric gravity dam which is the largest electric power producing facility and concrete structure in the United States. It is the 5th largest electric power producing facility in the world. Lake Roosevelt, created from the building of the dam, is a lovely summer recreation area. Below are a few photos of the surrounding area.
To the left is a picture of Dry Falls, which is actually about 35 miles west of Grand Coulee. These falls were created after a catastrophic collapse of an enormous ice dam 10,000 to 15,000 years ago. Though it no longer carries water, it is the remnant of what was once the largest waterfall known to have existed on the earth. It is 3.5 miles wide with cliffs that drop 400 ft. This compares to Niagra Falls, which is 1 mile wide with a 165 foot drop. Below is a photo of a local landmark known as Steamboat Rock.
Below are some rock formations along Banks Lake, which is a 27 mile long reservoir that runs from Grand Coulee to Coulee City.
